In theory this is true. However, Insurance companies are "for profit" companies, naturally,, and therefore need to make money on your premiums. They do this by investing the money you pay into your premiums, just like banks do. The burden of your healthcare is not borne out by your "group", but by the profits the company makes on your policy; to be more precise, the profits made on your group's policies. This is why there is an incentive to deny you your benefits.

Nice ad, but what if one of those group members isn't careless and never has to draw on insurance? What then? Their money just goes down the toilet. It's impossible for each group member to benefit equally from this money pool; why don't people direct their hard earned capital elsewhere and just be accountable for themselves? Or, if they still wish to adhere to this "safety in numbers" idea, they could form their OWN insurance group. No middleman needed.

great simple an effective vid. Of course the amount you pay for your cover vaires by insurer and this isn't addressed. You really need to get quotes from multiple providers to make sure you're getting the best deal around. Sites like cheapest-insurance. info can help a lot with this

it is a cool animation, but I believe the title is sort of a play on words of the plot. If you read the description it say that this is the story of a life insurance agent attempting to take on time and fate. So its the life of an insurance agent, life insurance. That's how I understood it. Titles don't have to be taken in exact context they can be hidden meanings or plays on words too. Hope this helped

Do people realize what the private health insurance industry is all about? They market themselves as an industry out to help you when you get sick. But in all reality, they're bottom line is to increase their multi-billion dollar profits and deny you coverage when your expenses are taking a toll on their corporate coffers. I guess only when millions of Americans more are becoming bankrupt, sick and being denied coverage, will they learn that the private health insurance industry needs to go.

We HAVE Dental insurance and the costs are still ridiculous. I'm not looking forward to going next month. I know I have some cavities and I had two fillings fall out, one up front and one back molar. I don't know what I'm going to do if I need crowns/root canal. I'd definitely have the back molar pulled. Ugh... I also still have 1 baby tooth because my left eye tooth never came down... it's still in my head. lol My parents couldn't afford that one when I was a kid and now I can't @ 36.

Cut just a tiny portion of the military spending, and you get free dental care for the whole country, cut half the spending the military, and you got healthcare for everybody.. the US spends 300 billion dollars every year on the military, the 2nd country who spends the most on military is Japan.. and they spend about 40 billion.. there's a 260 billion dollar gap between the two countries who spend the most on their military.. Actually there is no such stipulation in the current reform package. Mandatory treatment at county hospital emergency rooms has been a safety net law since 1986 (EMTALA, Google it). It is a huge cost to the taxpayers, but without it hospitals would just dump patients without insurance out on the streets and not treat them as they bleed to death. That is the only thing illegal aliens have access to: THE ER. So someone has been feeding you a load of crap.

The people who think their health coverage is great either work for a company that pays most of the coverage. Also they generally haven't needed to use their insurance ..or have been healthy. Most insurance companies will not pay for well care...they bank on you getting really sick and then they limit your care.

The health care industry spent over $1.4 million a day this year lobbying our elected officials in DC. Corporations never doing anything unless it will profit its bottom line/shareholders. I am 59 and I heartily agree with you. Those of us who were courageous enough to fight the system back in the sixties and seventies against Vietnam and for Civil Rights and watched in horror as our non-thinking peers followed that old WWII mindset to the position we are in now. For some the sacrifices were too great and they learned that doing the right thing will get you killed, umemployed and imprisoned. If you have an accident in the US - you still wait for the surgeon to become available. I don't understand you point about the "Ponzi" scheme. A Ponzi scheme depends upon new arrivals bailing out the existing members. But in the UK everybody pays taxes - there are no new members.

@ToothbrushMan you are straw-manning my position. I am not arguing for the US model, rather I am arguing against both the US model and European model. Furthermore, the fact that European Healthcare "covers everyone" means little because the rationing is applied across the surface. As time goes by, the Ponzi scheme is revealed more and more and the "new investors" cannot fund the entitled, and the rationing gets worse.

@libertyplayground Well that's a fine theory, but contradicts the facts. Healthcare in Europe costs about half the price or less than it does in the US. I pay about 10$ a month in tax to be covered - and everybody gets covered - no one gets left behind.

@Dbmwjo I'm certainly not for the status quo... it's the result of a series of market interventions that have been bad, imo. Back when the industry was basically a free market, supply was high and price was low. The new york times even reported - and complained about - the fact that lodge practices were offering health care for one year for 1 dollar back in 1910.

@libertyplayground I think it's debatable whether or not public healthcare is sustainable. Would you say the healthcare system America has today is as good as it can be? Are you for any kind of reform? Privatization and health insurance guarantees some people will not receive healthcare. That doesn't seem like a very efficient system within a developed nation. Economics and business aside, isn't healthcare important enough to make sure everyone has access to it whether they have money or not?

@Dbmwjo Government-provided healthcare does NOT assure all citizens can receive healthcare. It makes people dependent on government for their healthcare, and at the same time drives a wedge between supply and demand which raises prices. The government eventually can no longer confiscate enough income to fund it, and gives up. You can see this in European healthcare, or American municipalities that have had to cut various services in the recent downturn. It's not sustainable.

@AutumnAlmonds Yes, I know. I'm using the word free as a figure of speech to mean in the moment of treatment, a patient does not have to pay. Instead, the costs are spread out over everyone. More than anything, this whole debate is a moral issue. Is healthcare something important enough that it should be guaranteed to all citizens or is it a luxury that goes to the person with more cash? It just seems odd to strictly argue for the latter.

Its obvious why healthcare is so expensive. When people are not responsilble for paying for the services they recieve, they have no problem racking up the bill because its someone else's money. I think its ridiculous when someone, in their last two months of life, spend over 40 grand on treatments that didn't really do anyhting anyway. The whole system is wasteful.

ZepDzen - The average citizen in China can afford to see a doctor but healthcare may not be readily available if you live iin the countryside. But it depends on what you need, in America your insurance decides whether you live or die. Of course this doesn't go for if you are an illegal here and are on Medicaid then of course it's free.
